Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
