Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular rulings from the official, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
